Abstract

The rapid development of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) is transforming the digital media environment and posing significant challenges to fake news detection. Currently, AI-generated content can be produced automatically at scale, integrates multimodal capabilities, and achieves a high degree of realism, thereby increasing the sophistication of political deepfakes, celebrity impersonation, financial fraud, and related forms of misinformation. This paper analyzes the technical foundations of generative AI and highlights the relationship between content generation mechanisms and the growing complexity of fake news detection. Based on a review of the literature and an examination of current fake news detection approaches, the findings indicate that detecting fake news in the AI era is a dynamic problem that requires a multi-layered approach, combining technological solutions with media governance strategies.
