Over the past decade, social media platforms and microblogging services such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Sina Weibo have become indispensable tools in modern social life. With billions of users worldwide, these platforms play a crucial role in sharing information and opinions, primarily through messages, images, and videos. Governments also leverage social media to disseminate official information, taking advantage of their rapid and broad reach. However, the rapid growth of social media has also created an environment conducive to fraudulent activities, propaganda, and the spread of rumors, leading to widespread misinformation. Therefore, detecting and combating fake news has become an urgent necessity. This paper summarizes recent research on methods for detecting fake news on social media. We analyze the concept of fake news and related terms, introduce publicly available datasets and online tools for real-time news verification, and describe content- and context-based fake news detection methods. The paper also compares the effectiveness of existing fake news detection techniques.
